CACFP Week raises awareness of critical meal program

The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is an essential USDA meal program helping to combat hunger. The program typically serves children in childcare centers and after-school youth enrichment programs as well as adults in daycare settings. During this past year, CACFP meal providers have played an especially critical role as fewer kids were participating in school meal programs and instead turning to community centers, Boys & Girls’ Clubs and similar organizations for a consistent meal.

Annually, the third week of March is a time to acknowledge the hard work of CACFP providers to nourish kids and vulnerable adults. CACFP Week, March 15-20, 2021, is a time to raise awareness for the CACFP, educate kids and parents about the program, and teach kids about healthy eating.

Visit https://CACFPWeek.org to learn more about this commemorative occasion and tap into tools that can be used to elevate awareness and appreciation for the CACFP. (PreK kids will love the Sesame Street videos and materials!) The National CACFP Sponsors Association provides easy-to-use tools, including:

  • A press release, a letter to congress and a request for proclamation.
  • Fun activities and communications tools to educate children and parents.
  • Tips and videos for getting kids to try new foods and eat breakfast.
  • Social media images and banners.
  • A flyer for community outreach.

If you provide meals under the CACFP, take advantage of this opportunity to toot your own horn! Let people know how you’re helping prevent food insecurity during the pandemic and beyond.
