Minnesota students can get one breakfast and one lunch at no cost at schools participating in the School Nutrition Programs, regardless of family income. So if school meals are free, why should families still complete an Application for Educational Benefits?
Because it’s related to so much more than only meals. The form doesn’t just determine school meal eligibility. The Application for Educational Benefits can help eligible families access additional benefits. At the same time, the information can help schools receive important funding for programs and services that benefit students.
How filling out forms can help schools and eligible families:
- School funding: Schools may be able to access funding for educational programs, services and other resources for students.
- Summer grocery support: Students may qualify for SUN Bucks, which helps families purchase groceries during the summer.
- Internet and utility discounts: Families may be able to reduce their internet and utility costs.
- Academic support: Students may receive tutoring, after-school programs and other academic resources
- Test fee savings: Students may obtain reduced or waived fees for certain college entrance and Advanced Placement exams.
- Community discounts: Families may get free or discounted admissions to local museums, theaters, and events.
One form. Five minutes. Big impact.
That’s the Minnesota Department of Education’s message this year. Completing the Application for Educational Benefits is easy and quick. Only one application is needed per household. It only takes a few minutes. And it unlocks valuable support year-round.

Families may not understand right away that this form can help provide additional support in a multitude of ways, so make sure to share this info and resources to increase their chances of filling it out.
